There’s something about the story of “The Lion King.” Whether it’s the prodigal son returning home, venturing out to truly find yourself, or just simply good overcoming evil, there’s something about this Disney tale that everyone can relate to. And the fact that there are cute fuzzy lions involved doesn’t hurt. Now, its success and popularity has been proven once again. This time, on Broadway.
The Lion King has been playing on Broadway since 1997 and since that time it’s grossed $853,846,062 — just edging out The Phantom of the Opera, which has grossed $853,122,062 since its opening just three months before The Lion King.
Along with being the highest-grossing Broadway show of all time, The Lion King also becomes one of the longest-running. With 514 productions in over 15 years, there are only five shows that have had a longer run on Broadway, each just as iconic as the next. They include A Chorus Line, Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago.
The Lion King just celebrated its fifteenth anniversary on Broadway back in November, and it’s still playing at the Minskoff Theatre today. It’s most known for its vibrant costumes, dynamic dance numbers, and of course, that familiar song and story of Simba and his friends.
